Part Time/Seasonal: Art Instructor Assistant for Camp BW Summer Camps

At BW, our Arts Academy Camp BW summer instructors are a bold beacon of energy, kindness, knowledge, and guidance to our students and teen assistants. The role is best described as camp counselor meets art educator. 

Instructors will be responsible for planning and implementing art curriculum and activities, recreational activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of campers by supervising them during activities, providing guidance and support, and maintaining a positive camp environment; their duties may include leading or facilitating group games and enforcing camp rules while fostering a sense of community among campers. Instructors will work closely with other counselors and artists. Our camps will always have a minimum of two adults and 2-4 Teen Apprentices and we currently allow a maximum of 20 students per camp.

Key responsibilities of Instructors:

  • Curriculum Development and Implementation
    • Work cooperatively with our Youth Art Education Coordinator and Executive Director to plan themed weeks for each camp. 
    • Plan and implement age-appropriate arts and crafts activities for each camp
    • Complete the provided lesson plans, identifying state academic standards that will be met within the lessons
    • Provide needed supply lists on a provided timeline
    • Provide cooperative input for field trips and guest artist planning
  • Supervision and Guidance
    • Provide close supervision to campers and apprentices, offering support and addressing individual needs
  • Campers’ Safety
    • Actively monitor campers and apprentices during activities, ensuring their physical safety and addressing any potential hazards
  • Activity Planning and Execution
    • Design and lead various camp activities like morning welcome, ice breaker games, afternoon activities
  • Group Dynamics
    • Foster a positive group dynamic with campers and apprentices, encouraging cooperation and inclusivity
  • Skill Development
    • Guide campers through art activities, teaching them new skills and encouraging the development of acquired skills
  • Classroom Maintenance
    • Assist with the upkeep and maintenance of the classroom and shared Bottle Works spaces by helping to set up and clean up activities or guiding apprentices in the process
  • Field Trip Participation
    • Lead student groups during field trips, ensuring safety and adherence to guidelines
    • Monitor student behavior and address any issues that may arise
    • Facilitate interactive learning experiences by asking questions and engaging students with the site. 

Required skills and qualities:

  • Clearances
    • Instructors must hold all clearances required for Pennsylvania educators
      • Child Abuse History Clearance
      • FBI Fingerprinting
      • Criminal Background Check
      • Mandated Reporter Training
  • Training Program Participation
    • There is a required training program June 10th-12th from 10:00am-1:00pm. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Ability to build rapport with children of different ages and backgrounds, creating a positive and engaging atmosphere
  • Leadership abilities
    • Confidence in leading large groups and making decisions in various situations
  • Patience and empathy
    • Ability to manage challenging behaviors and provide support to campers
  • Strong Communication Skills
    • Ability to interact with other teachers, parents, students, and staff confidently and clearly

The use of alcohol or non-prescription drugs prior to or during class is strictly prohibited and will result in termination of contract.

Camps run from 9:00 am-3:00 pm. Instructors are expected to arrive at 8:30 am, and are typically out the door between 3:15 and 3:30 pm.
