CAMPS FOR KIDS

 

Making Waves – All Things Ocean Art! Register Now

June 26 – 30, 9 AM – 3 PM

Learn about the ocean and its creatures as we create marine life art from found objects such as can pull tabs, bottle lids, cans, tubes, and more. Traditional art mediums will be used to make ocean scenes and sea life on large paper murals, paintings, and sculpture. The importance of clean water in our water systems and nature around the world, reducing pollution and litter, will be emphasized. We will have some splashy fun outside too! Guest speakers will visit and talk about their jobs working to preserve nature and wildlife. This camp will be a combination of art, science, and conservation.

Mindful Art – Elementary  Register Now  

July 10 -14, 9 AM – 3 PM

Learn to be in the moment and seize the day while we learn and explore art. Through curriculum lessons from Mindful Schools, we’ll learn stress reduction techniques, learn to pay attention better, explore the importance of clear mindful communication, explore compassion, empathy, and other valuable life skills. We’ll combine mindfulness with artistic endeavors such as mandalas, zentangles, color exploration, mindful photography walks, journaling, and hand drumming. This summer camp is full of variety and will be packed with fun!

Grades- entering 2nd – entering 5th

Around the World – Ethnic Arts & Cultures  Register Now  

July 31 – August 4, 9 AM – 3 PM

Travel around the world as we learn about people, their cultures,
and the arts. We will “visit” the Americas, Europe, Africa, and more! Travelers will learn about the Anasazi cliff dwellers from red rock country and paint petroglyphs and other art using primitive tools. Students will learn about West Africa through talks, dancing, and drumming. Tour Slovakia as we decorate kraslice (eggs) with hot wax and dyes, make corn husk dolls, and learn about holiday traditions. Learn about Honduras and other countries in Central America while creating clever craft items from recycled objects. Guest speakers will visit to enrich the experience. Students will make a passport and have it “stamped” for each country and ethnicity visited.

Mini Masters Art  Register Now  

August 7 – 11, 9 AM – 3 PM

Learn and create like famous artists as you travel through time. Students will explore the Renaissance, Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, and many more art periods. Whether it’s making self-portraits, sketching en plein air, painting, drawing, sculpting, or practicing other forms of art, you’re guaranteed to have fun creating masterpieces! This is our fifth summer offering Mini Masters camp. All new artists and projects! There will be a student art exhibition for family and friends on the last day.

Planting Seeds in nature, art, and kindness  Register Now  

August 8 – 10, 9 AM – 12 PM

Enjoy all that is summer as we create prints, mandalas, mosaics and more with flowers, vegetables, bark, and leaves. We will engage in short quests to forge for natural art materials, read a book daily, and practice kindness to ourselves and others.

African, Drum, Dance and Celebration – All ages!  Register Now  

August 14 – 18, 9 AM – 3 PM

Come on an African adventure as we immerse ourselves in the rich history of drum, dance and song, of Guinea, West Africa. You will experience West African drum and dance, food, arts, crafts, and stories. Bring your energy on an expedition exploring West Africa. It’s culturally rich and highly educational, as well as physically motivating. We’ll engage in Kulani’s mission of creating community & spreading joy. This camp is for a wide range of ages modeled after the Guinea community our instructors learned from where adults, teens & young children learn dance & drum as a community. Teen participants will have the chance to explore their own leadership skills. Everyone will have the opportunity to be a part of Kulani Kids and perform with the adult West African Drum and Dance group, Kulani, during Ethnic Fest 2017. The last day will include a performance for parents.

WORKSHOPS FOR TEENS AND ADULTS

 


 

Girl Power!  Register Now  
June 19 – 23, 9 AM – 3 PM

This empowering workshop is just for young women. We’ll explore our own lives and learn about the lives of women in other parts of the world as we watch sections of the documentary “Girl Rising”. We’ll discover our own self-confidence through games, journaling, dance, yoga, self-portraits, and many artistic endeavors. Because girls can change the world, we’ll talk about how to be an advocate for yourself, others and what you believe in! Through curriculum lessons from Mindful Schools, we’ll learn stress reductions techniques, learn to pay attention better, explore the importance of clear mindful communication, explore compassion, empathy, self-care and self-compassion. Guest presenters will also join us in addressing issues facing young women today such as how to be safe while interacting online, fitness, health, body image, and bullying. Staff from Victim Services Inc. will provide education on the importance of consent, the impact of sexual violence, and how to seek help for yourself or a friend who may be impacted. We will have a showcase to show off what we learned on the last day of camp!

Mega Masters Art  Register Now  

July 10 – 14, 9 AM – 3 PM

Learn and view art and its history from art periods and artists of the past and present. Teens and adults will create unique art projects based on the techniques and styles of master artists. Impressionism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Renaissance, etc. will be explored. Sketching en plein air in the Garden on Chestnut will develop attention to detail in your work. You asked for it and we have made this camp available for our older students! This is our second year offering this camp. New artists! New projects! There will be a student art exhibition for family and friends on the last day.

Creative Writing  Register Now  

August 14 – 18, 9 AM – 3 PM

Calling all writers, young Salingers, Plaths and Kerouacs! Students will gain insight on how to generate vivid imagery and memorable language, construct quirky characters, render unique settings, and exercise plot elements in a variety of genres. Instruction includes guided writing exercises, creating found shape poems, sharing of original work, reading and discussing great examples of creative writing, and revision guidance. Indulge in your imagination!

PIANO CAMPS

Piano Fun for Beginners
This will be a joy-filled introduction to playing the piano! Students will learn a new song each day, play games that teach beginning keyboard concepts, and eat a healthy snack. Parents and siblings are invited to a demonstration performance on the last day. Maximum of 8 children per camp; each child will play on a full-size digital piano in the Piano For Pleasure classroom.
