Irene was an inspiration to all of them, not just because of her creativity but on a personal level in her lifelong enjoyment of her artistic talent, her wonderful gift of laughter and spirit she brought to her entire family, and always striving to improve her art by taking classes and being active and involved in several art groups up until the year she passed away.
Irene Ackerman (Winiarchik):
Irene Ackerman 1937 – 2017. Irene was a life long artist and resident of Beaver County. She was a graduate of Quaker Valley High School and in later years, Pittsburgh Art Institute. Irene was a founding member of Cranberry Artist Network, West Hills Art League, Beaver Art Group and Beaver Valley Artists. She studied under Norma French and Marianne Hilke for many years. Some of the mediums she worked in were oils, acrylic, charcoal, pencil, and finally watercolor which became a favorite. Irene also did scrimshaw and used a burning tool to creat images on deer hides. Her creativity branched out into every aspect of her live and she was a very caring and thoughtful person as well.
Keith Baldwin, son of Joe and Denise Baldwin, is a twenty year old accounting and finance major at Pitt Johnstown, with an eye for photography. His interest in art began at a very young age where he and his sister, Kasia Baldwin, would spend hours drawing with just pencil and paper. Keith attributes his artistic interest and ability to his Grammie, Irene Ackerman. He believes that the artistic ability has been passed down through his family genetically, but in different art forms.
Kasia Baldwin is a 22 year old Johnstown native who always had a passion for art of all kinds. She picked up a pencil and paper at a few years old, and she hasn’t put it down since. She’s dabbled in several different mediums, being watercolor, acrylic, oil, charcoal, pastels, ink, and of course pencil. Her Grammie, Irene Ackerman, is the backbone for all her artistic skills and taught her a great deal of techniques that she still uses to this day.
Singer-songwriter, guitarist and bassist, Denise Baldwin is a veteran performer who migrated to the Laurel Highlands from the Pittsburgh area, where she made her living and a name for herself as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the rock bands Sojourn and The Works playing nightclubs in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and South Carolina and opening for national acts. For the past 17 years, she’s been performing as a high-energy acoustic solo artist, and has been one half of the duo Two Far Gone for 11 years. In the same timespan, Denise polished her vocal talents with world-renowned voice trainer William Riley. Denise feels blessed to have the creative spark handed down from her mother, Irene Ackerman.
